The FTC is reportedly investigating Amazon’s acquisition of MGM
Amazon’s MGM acquisition may take longer than planned. Information sources The Federal Trade Commission says Amazon has launched an “in-depth” investigation into antitrust abuse in connection with the acquisition of MGM. Authorities are concerned about Amazon’s potential to “illegally increase” its influence in offering goods and services, not just the content it produces.
MGM declined to comment. We asked Amazon for a comment.
A study would not be completely unexpected. The FTC and the Justice Department often agreed to review the deal when Big Tech critic Lina Khan was present. Named the FTC Chair. Amazon was waiting for a pressure and went so far Ask for the khan’s rejection in future cases. MGM is not expected to bow in the investigation.
This will not necessarily result in the FTC blocking the deal. However, it sets conditions for the purchase and can easily postpone a completed agreement for several months.
